16 | his sense of her beside him

Lir was glad of the leather cloak and its hood to keep the rain off, especially when it seemed Belisare was intent on watching until the three of them and the horses were completely out of sight. He let her without complaint. It was still days from Winterfall when he was expected at Remeltz, and despite his present circumstances, he was in no great rush to arrive there. The riding had been easy enough that his insides were not complaining much, but a bit of rest was probably a good idea. They sat on their steady horses longer still, until the others were beyond earshot. Only when there was no trace of them did Belisare at last seem satisfied with the departure and turned her horse down the other fork in the path.

The road was easy to follow. Either whatever had originally cut the road through the trees or the years of travelers moving along it had deepened the course of it through the trees so that the sides of the road were up near his horse’s shoulder. Their path turned them towards the dark, crooked trees, and he tried to remember if the Wood had looked this way in his youth. Tried, and failed. All he could remember were the admonishments that he keep clear of it even though he could conjure no concrete sense of danger from the faded recollections. Her explanation of the pwca and the very real, very recent reminder of her ambush was enough that he didn’t need Belisare’s warning to decide to stick close to her. He had no intention of wandering off. He moved his horse to follow hers, glad to be on the same mount that had carried him the day before. They were at least a little familiar with each other, which was a comfort. Around him, the Wood felt wild in a way that he trusted less than he trusted either his recently acquainted mount or Belisare. The more he saw of how she behaved around her men, and, he had to admit, the way she behaved in the face of her lover’s antagonizing, nurtured his impulse to trust her. She seemed wary of the Wood, despite proclaiming there was nothing for them to fear within it. It might be that she was concerned about sending off the two recruits with an injured man and horses to guard, or it could be aught else. From the way she cast her gaze at the trees around them, Lir was inclined to think it was aught else.

He thought he felt something there, but couldn’t put a name to it. That feeling made him wary as well. There was magic here. It was like a frequency that vibrated his bones or lifted the hairs on the back of his neck, but he couldn’t see anything that indicated a greater wildness in the Vermillion than in other forest. Not with his normal sight, anyway. He knew magic
